All About LASIK Eye SurgeonsSo you decided you want to go through with the LASIK eye surgery and get rid of your glasses (at least somewhat). But how do you pick among all those LASIK eye surgeons in the yellow pages? All LASIK eye surgeons will tell you only what you want to hear in their ads. Among all the LASIK eye surgeons you will see that they are all qualified, experienced, and educated in the latest technology. In fact, they probably ALL will put their best foot forward on the advertisements. Why would these LASIK eye surgeons do otherwise? They want your business of course. But how do you pick the best LASIK eye surgeon from among the pack? First of all, you want a surgeon from among all the LASIK eye surgeons who is honest and trustworthy. Ideally, you want one of the LASIK eye surgeons with no reservations about telling you that you are NOT a good candidate for the procedure. This goes against the grain because LASIK eye surgeons are not in the business of turning away customers in order to remain profitable. And LASIK eye surgeons are not optometrists so they personally do not have a business of eyeglasses and contact lens to fall back on. So it seems that you could not get an objective assessment on your candidacy for this elective eye surgery from among the LASIK eye surgeons because it would not be in their best interests. What are you to do? You can get an evaluation by an optometrist who has no interest in LASIK because it is not what he or she does for profit. Optometrists sell glasses and contact lenses but they also stay up-to-date on advances in LASIK technology and many times have seen the successful and unsuccessful results of the procedure by LASIK eye surgeons in their patients. Your optometrist does not perform LASIK so he or she does not have the same interests as the LASIK eye surgeons. In other words, your optometrist can tell you that LASIK is not a good idea because he or she is familiar with the condition and health of your eyes. Also, good news gets around but bad news gets around even quicker. If there is a doctor in the group of LASIK eye surgeons in your community that is doing a poor job or has had poor results, your optometrist has probably heard of it. This information from your optometrist is even better than a referral. And, your optometrist can even help out as a second set of eyes to evaluate your post-operative recovery separate from the evaluations of the LASIK eye surgeons. Your optometrist can see the same thing the LASIK surgeon can and will probably tell you quicker if there is a problem where the LASIK eye surgeons might try to save face as a problem would cause bad publicity. Remember that LASIK eye surgery is never medically necessary and if it is, it is only in rare isolated circumstances. You need to look past all of the aggressive marketing used by LASIK eye surgeons and get the advice of an objective person such as your optometrist. |
